What is A/B testing?
A/B testing is also commonly known as the split test. It helps to understand what visitors to our website or readers of our email echo. The plan is that this results in an increased click-through or, even better, conversion rate.
The better you optimize your website, the more active calls and emails, the more likely it is that visitors will become leading or customers.
A/B testing is specifically about showing two types of the same property (landing page, CDA, or email) to different sections of your audience at the same time and comparing which of the two makes the most difference.
How to create this magical HubSpot hack?
Let’s start with the requirements. To set this up, we need access to HubSpot Sales or Service, Pro, or Enterprise. This will allow you to create lead rotation, in this case, the A/B test!
Method 1: HubSpot lead rotor
This first method for A / B test workflow emails involves the creative use of the lead rotation feature in the workflow tool.
Step 1: Publish your emails
Clone the email you want for the A / B test. Change the subject line, image, button shape, or anything you want to test on your cloned version. Save email for automation.
Step 2: Create custom number property
Create a custom number property on the Contacts settings tab. To do this you will need administrative rights at your HubSpot event. Make sure you do not accidentally check the Currency tab. This field must be a regular old number!
Step 3: Create a custom owner property
Create a custom owner property on the Contacts settings tab. To do this you will need administrative rights at your HubSpot event. I ended it as an “A / B test” to let any other user of our Hubspot event know what a field is and what it is used for.
Step 4: Create your A/B test workflow
Create workflow. The criterion for this workflow should be your motivation criterion. In our case, it refers to ezCater as a user.
Step 5: Create your breeding stream workflow
Create an “if / then” branch hierarchy using the custom number you created in the first step of your pet stream workflow.
If it is equal to “1”, send them a branch that will send “version A” of your email. If the number is equal to “2”, send them down to the other branch and send “version B”.
Method 2: Zapier, a HubSpot integration partner
For marketers who are unable or unwilling to use the lead cycle for any reason, there is another way to conduct A / B testing on workflow emails.
This second method requires the use of Zapier, the HubSpot integration partner.
Step 1: Publish your emails
Clone the email you want for the A / B test. Change the subject line, image, or anything you want to test on your cloned version. Save email for automation.
Step 2: Create a custom number property
Create a custom number property in the Contacts settings tab. To do this you will need administrative rights at your HubSpot event. Make sure you do not accidentally check the Currency tab. This field must be a regular old int!
Step 3: Create your A/B test workflow
Create workflow. The criterion for this workflow should be your motivation criterion. In our case, it refers to ezCater as a user.
Step 4: Create your job
Set the Zap. Select the Zapier application format within Zapier. Then select “Numbers”. From there select “Spreadsheet-style formula” and place “RANDBETWEEN (1, 2)” as the value for the formula.
Step 5: Create your development stream workflow
Create an “if / then” branch hierarchy using the custom number you created in the first step of your pet stream workflow. If it is equal to “1”, send them a branch that will send “version A” of your email. If the number is equal to “2”, send them down to the other branch and send “version B”.
